Amendment to the male Infertility Guideline

The American Urological Association (AUA), in collaboration with the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), has released the 2024 amendment to the Male Infertility Guideline.
This guideline provides a comprehensive framework for the evaluation and management of the male partner in an infertile couple. It emphasizes the importance of obtaining a complete history and conducting a physical examination, followed by appropriate diagnostic testing when necessary. The guideline also covers medical treatments, surgical techniques, and the use of intrauterine insemination (IUI) and assisted reproductive technologies (ART) to ensure optimal patient care.
The 2024 amendment introduces new evidence that supports updated recommendations for the evaluation and management of male infertility.
Key changes in the Guideline include:
- Update of a recommendation on the evaluation of azoospermic patients
- Update of a recommendation on karyotype testing
- Updates on which imaging modalities should or should not be used in the evaluation of patients
- A new recommendation on the use of testicular sperm in non-azoospermic patients
- Updates to the WHO reference intervals for human semen characteristics
- A new table defining common terms in semen analysis
«Male infertility contributes to 50% of infertility cases and also provides a window into overall male health. These guidelines will assist healthcare providers with the evaluation and management of male infertility, leading to improved male reproductive potential, offspring health, and overall men’s health.»
